SIMULTANEOUS DEGREE AND MULTIPLE MAJOR

(SENATE POLICY 60-00, 62-00)

Simultaneous degree and multiple major programs allow students to combine majors. Because the majors must be in distinct fields of study, students may not combine a general major and a departmental major in the same college, e.g., majors in science and biology.

ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS: Students must meet the entry requirements for each major. If a student is combining a major that is under administrative enrollment controls, procedures for entry to the controlled major should be followed. Generally, it is not possible for the student to incorporate more than one major that is under administrative enrollment controls into a multiple major or simultaneous degree program.

GRADUATION REQUIREMENTS: University, college, and major requirements in effect at the time of entry to each degree program must be met. Each major and degree is noted on the student's final transcript.

DIPLOMAS: Students receive a diploma for each degree earned.

DIFFERENCES BETWEEN SIMULTANEOUS DEGREE AND MULTIPLE MAJOR:

SIMULTANEOUS DEGREE

MULTIPLE MAJOR

Combinations of majors: Students combine a maximum of two majors.

Combinations of majors: Students may combine two or more majors.

Credit Requirement: Baccalaureate combinations require at least 30 credits more than the number of credits required for the degree with the lower total credit requirement. For example, if the student combined a degree requiring 124 credits with a degree requiring 130 credits, the minimum credit requirement would be 154 credits (124+30).

Associate combinations require at least 15 credits more than the number of credits required for the degree with the lower total credit requirement.

Credit Requirement: There is no minimum. Therefore, it might be possible for a student to complete a multiple major with the number of credits required for the degree with the greatest total requirement.

NOTE: Additional policies have been implemented by some colleges. Students should contact the appropriate academic advising and information center (see Academic Advising and Information Centers at University Park or Academic Advising and Information Centers at Locations Other than University Park) for specific information.

STUDENT ACTION:

  1. Contact the appropriate academic advising and information centers (Academic Advising and Information Centers at University Park or Academic Advising and Information Centers at Locations Other than University Park) or the department offering each major that you are considering. These majors should be fully investigated, and the rationale for combining the majors should be discussed. For each major, obtain information on entry requirements, retention standards, and degree and graduation requirements.
  2. Consult with departmental advisers to develop a plan for the completion of each major. Brainstorm possibilities for courses that can meet requirements for both majors and discuss possibilities for course substitutions. Be sure to consider the kind of work that will be demanded in each course and determine the combination of courses that will be compatible in a semester-by-semester plan.
  3. Determine whether the simultaneous degree or multiple major program is appropriate.
  4. Obtain an application for the approval of a simultaneous degree/multiple major from the appropriate academic advising and information center (Academic Advising and Information Centers at University Park or Academic Advising and Information Centers at Locations Other than University Park) or from the appropriate dean. Complete the requested information based on the plans you developed in consultation with the departmental advisers.
  5. Review your plans with an adviser in the major in which you are currently enrolled. Obtain the adviser's signature under "College of Enrollment" on the application form.
  6. Review your plans with an adviser in the department offering the other major. Obtain the adviser's signature under "Cooperating College" on the application form.
  7. Obtain approval and signatures from the department head and appropriate dean in the "Cooperating College."
  8. Obtain approval and signatures from the department head and appropriate dean in the "College of Enrollment." Submit the completed form to this dean's office for processing.

APPLICATION DEADLINE: Deans have the flexibility to accept students into these programs at any time prior to graduation.

ADVISER ASSIGNMENT: An adviser is assigned for the second major if the application is approved. The student's official adviser is the adviser in the "College of Enrollment" rather than in the "Cooperating College." The student is responsible for consulting with the adviser from the "Cooperating College" to see that all requirements for both programs are met.

NOTE: Students wishing to change or withdraw from (invalidate) approved simultaneous degree or multiple major programs must inform, in writing, the appropriate deans of the colleges involved.

The University may make changes in policies, procedures, educational offerings, and requirements at any time. Please consult a Penn State academic adviser for more detailed information.
