Entrance to Major Requirements
In order to be eligible for entrance to a major in the Eberly College of Science, a student must have:
- Attained at least a 2.00 cumulative grade-point average.
- Satisfied all additional academic requirements as specified below by the major.
| Astronomy and Astrophysics (ASTRO) |
Completed ASTRO 291 GN(3), CHEM 110 GN(3), MATH 140 GQ(4), MATH 141 GQ(4), PHYS 211 GN(4), and PHYS 212 GN(4); and earned a grade of C or better in each of these courses. |
| Biochemistry and Molecular Biology (B M B) |
Completed CHEM 110 GN(3),CHEM 112 GN(3), CHEM 111 GN(1), and MATH 140 GQ(4); and earned a grade of C or better in each of these courses. |
| Biology (BIOL) |
Completed BIOL 110 GN(4), CHEM 110 GN(3), MATH 140 GQ(4); and earned a grade of C or better in each of these courses. Completed at least one of the following courses, BIOL 220W GN(4), 230W GN(4), or 240W GN(4), with a grade of C or better. |
| Biotechnology (BIOTC) |
Completed CHEM 110 GN(3),CHEM 112 GN(3), CHEM 111 GN(1), and MATH 140 GQ(4); and earned a grade of C or better in each of these courses. |
| Chemistry (CHEM) |
Completed CHEM 110 GN(3), CHEM 111 GN(1), CHEM 112 GN(3), CHEM 113 GN(1), CHEM 210(3), MATH 140 GQ(4), and MATH 141 GQ(4); earned a grade of C or better in each of these courses; and earned a combined grade point average of at least 2.50 in these courses. (Note: If courses are repeated, only the better grade will be used in this calculation.) |
| Forensic Science (FRNSC) |
Completed CHEM 110 GN(3), CHEM 111 GN(1), CHEM 112 GN(3), MATH 140 GQ(4), MATH 141 GQ(4), and earned a grade of C or better in each of these courses. |
| Mathematics (MTHBA) (MTHBS) |
Completed MATH 140 GQ(4) and MATH 141 GQ(4); and earned a grade of C or better in each of these courses. |
| Microbiology (MICRB) |
Completed CHEM 110 GN(3),CHEM 112 GN(3), CHEM 111 GN(1), and MATH 140 GQ(4); and earned a grade of C or better in each of these courses. |
| Physics (PHYS) |
Completed CHEM 110 GN(3), MATH 140 GQ(4), MATH 141 GQ(4), PHYS 211 GN(4), and PHYS 212 GN(4); and earned a grade of C or better in each of these courses. |
| Premedicine (P M) |
Completed BIOL 110 GN(4), CHEM 110 GN(3), and MATH 140 GQ(4); and earned a grade of C or better in each of these courses. |
| Science (SC BA) (SC BS) |
The requirements apply for a student at any location offering the SC BA or SC BS major. Completed MATH 140 GQ(4) with a grade of C or better. Completed at least two of the following courses, BIOL 110 GN(4); CHEM 110 GN(3); PHYS 211 GN(4) or PHYS 250 GN(4), with a grade of C or better. |
| Five-year Science/Business, B.S./M.B.A., Program | This is a special highly competitive cooperative program between the Eberly College of Science and The Smeal College of Business. Students must consult with Peter Tombros (SC BS/MBA Program Director, 428 Thomas Building, 863-0284) early in their first semester to learn the entrance requirements and how to apply. |
| Statistics (STAT) |
Completed MATH 140 GQ(4) and MATH 141 GQ(4); and earned a grade of C or better in each of these courses. |

Entrance-to-college requirements for Science |
In order to be eligible for entrance to the Eberly College of Science in premajor (SCIEN) status, a student must have: 1) Attained at least a 2.00 cumulative grade-point average 2) Completed MATH 140 with a grade of C or better A student who meets the above requirements, but who has not demonstrated a comparable level of scholarship in other mathematics and science courses applicable to the programs of the college, is strongly encouraged to contact the Eberly College of Science Academic Advising Center (213 Whitmore, 814-863-3889) or other appropriate advising personnel for assistance. |
