Penn State Student Receives
Scholars Award from
American Chemical Society
15 March 2004 --Tudie
Ann Henry, a biochemistry and molecular biology major from
Philadelphia, recently has been named an American Chemical Society
(ACS) Scholar and has been awarded a $450 scholarship from the society.
ACS Scholars Awards are given out each academic year to high school seniors
as well as freshman, sophomore, and junior college students who are committed
to studying chemistry or related fields. Winners are selected and scholarship
amounts are determined based on academic achievement, financial need,
community involvement, and leadership qualities. Henry's former teacher,
Thomas Eberlein, assistant professor of chemistry, was
the one who encouraged her to apply. "I was very excited and grateful
to Dr. Eberlein for telling me about this scholarship," she said.
Eberlein said, "I was very pleased for Tudie Ann when I learned
that she had been named an ACS Scholar. This is a highly competitive award,
and something for which she, and Penn State, should be very proud."
Henry's name was listed among the 142 new scholars for the 2003-2004 academic
year in the 15 December 2003, issue of Chemical & Engineering News,
a magazine published by the ACS.
A native of Jamaica, Henry attended Penn State Schuylkill from Fall 2001
to Spring 2003 before transferring to the University Park campus. She
has been on the Dean's List every semester so far during her career at
Penn State. She also has tutored other students in chemistry, calculus,
biology, and food and nutrition.
Henry, who intends to graduate in Spring 2005, said she plans to attend
medical school or to earn a Ph.D. in biochemistry after leaving Penn State.
She is the daughter of Glenford Henry of Philadelphia.
