Frymoyer and Plonka Named Alumni Fellows

27 September 2000 -- Two graduates of the Eberly College of Science -- Edward Frymoyer, president of EMF Associates, Inc., and Fibre Channel Group, and James Plonka, vice president for electronic material, venture capital, advanced materials, and new businesses at Dow Chemical USA -- have been named Alumni Fellows by the Penn State Alumni Association. The award is the most prestigious honor given by the association.

Edward Frymoyer, '59 B.S. ESc, and '67 Ph.D. Phys, ranks as an international leader in the fiber-channel industry, the standard for information transfer between computers and storage devices. He holds several patents and his firms specialize in consultation and education programs -- with EMF Associates providing fibre-channel consulting and Fibre Channel Group offering training to engineers, executives, suppliers, systems users, technology managers, and trainers in the United States and England. A member of the Alumni Association and the Penn State Silicon Valley Chapter, of which he's a past officer, Frymoyer lives in Half Moon Bay, California.

James Plonka, '70 Ph.D. Chem, provides expertise at Dow Chemical USA in the areas of business development, international business operations, multinational joint ventures, and venture capital/private equity transactions. He began his career at Dow as a research scientist in 1970 and has held many research and business-management positions with the company and its subsidiaries in the United States and Japan. Under his direction, the Advanced Materials Unit, which includes electronic components, venture capital, and ceramic materials, was established as a global business at Dow. In 1998, Plonka was honored with the Eberly College of Science Outstanding Science Alumni Award. He lives in Midland, Michigan.
