Meyer Wins
Staff Excellence Award
17 March 2005—The 2005 Staff
Excellence Award will be presented to Robert C. Meyer,
associate director of contracts in the Eberly
College of Science at Penn
State University Park.
Established in 1993, this award recognizes the consistently
outstanding performance of a staff member who has demonstrated
and practiced the philosophy of continuous quality improvement,
team spirit and managerial excellence in the performance of
assigned duties, and who has provided leadership in establishing
a quality service orientation, so as to benefit his or her
unit and the University.
Hailed for his unsurpassed leadership, expertise and efficient
and tireless service, Meyer is described by his colleagues
as "willing to meet unreasonable demands." Nominators
say he is "widely recognized, on campus and off, for his
knowledge, for excellence and innovation, for his high ethical
standards and for his guidance of his very efficient staff."
A Penn State employee of 38 years, Meyer has been in his current
position for 14 years and is a leader among the University's
college research administrators. As head of the Eberly College
of Science Research
Office, he is responsible for pre- and
post-award management of restricted accounts and has responsibility
for processing proposals and awards for sponsored programs
for all faculty in the college. His office is held up across
campus as a model for excellence, efficiency and teamwork.
A member of the original team that implemented the Penn State
Purchasing Card, Meyer also was instrumental in the formation
of the Administrative Committee on Research (ACOR). He currently
is on the Penn State Travel Task Force helping to implement
ways to streamline reimbursement for travel while monitoring
conformance to federal travel guidelines.
He serves on national committees in the area of research administration—mentoring
and advising those at other universities. For 10 years, he
has been involved with the Federal
Demonstration Partnership,
implementing nation-wide changes aimed at streamlining the
research administration process. He also is a member of the
Society
of Research Administrators International and serves
as Penn State's representative to the Big Ten Business Officers
for Sponsored Projects.
