Mullen Coauthors Mathematics Book
John Wiley & Sons have recently published a book coauthored by Professor Gary L. Mullen, Chairman of the Department of Mathematics, and Charles F. Laywine of Brock University in Ontario, Canada. The book, titled "Discrete Mathematics Using Latin Squares," provides the historical background of the basic research discoveries made in the field over the past two centuries.
A Latin square is a square matrix in which each of a number of distinct symbols occurs exactly once in each row and once in each column. Not only do Latin squares have importance in several areas of mathematics, they also have applications, described in the book, to such diverse fields as engineering, computer science, cryptography and test design.
