Eberly College of Science Honors Four With Outstanding Science Alumni Award
Awards for Catherine Beath, vice-president of quality systems for Ethicon Endo-Surgery, Inc.; Marcus Hansen, president of Lockheed Martin Management and Data Systems; Woodrow Hoch, retired president of Viscosity Oil Company; and Morris Taradalsky, vice president of engineering at Exodus Communications; will be conferred during a 6 October reception at the Nittany Lion Inn. The award, established in 1997 by the Board of Directors of the Eberly College of Science Alumni Society, recognizes outstanding science alumni for their leadership in science and for the impact they have had and will continue to have on their professions. Catherine Beath, '70 B.S. Micrb, has more than 25 years of experience in the pharmaceutical and medical-device industries. She is a member of the Ethicon Endo-Surgery U.S. Board of Directors and has served the Health Industry Manufacturers Association in Washington, D.C., as chair of the vascular grafts task force and chair of the interventional cardiology task force. Her background also includes planning, training, and policy development and oversight on regulatory-affairs matters. She is a member of the Eberly College of Science B.S./M.B.A. Advisory Panel. Marcus Hansen, '69 B.S. Math and Phys, has responsibility for all aspects of business for Lockheed Martin Management and Data Systems, based in Valley Forge, which includes 7,800 employees and annual sales of $1.8 billion. He's a member of the advisory board at Penn State Great Valley and a member of the computer science and engineering division of Penn State's Industrial and Professional Advisory Council. In addition, he is a member of the board of directors of the Greater Philadelphia Chamber of Commerce. Woodrow Hoch, '42 B.S. CChem, served with the Army Corps of Engineers 540th Amphibious Brigade in Africa, Italy, France, and Germany during World War II. He was decorated with the Purple Heart and Silver Star. In 1951, he founded Master Oil Products and served as its president until 1957, when he bought Viscosity Oil, merged the companies, and remained president. Until 1985, he led the company as Viscosity Oil became a major supplier of lubricant oils, rust inhibitors, calibration fluids, greases, industrial oils, and diesel engine oils. He sold Viscosity Oil to Tenneco Oil and Gas in 1985 and retired. Morris Taradalsky, '70 B.S. Math, brings more than 30 years of experience in the computer industry to his position at Exodus Communications. His experience includes 18 years with IBM, where he worked in a variety of engineering and management positions. He graduated magna cum laude from Penn State, was a member of Pi Mu Epsilon honor society and received the Evan Pugh Award in recognition of his academic achievements. He was honored as a Penn State Alumni Fellow in 1994. < S W S >
