Penn State Global-Warming Research Cited as Highly Influential Worldwide

11 December 2006—In the most recent analysis by Thomson Scientific's Essential Science Indicators, Penn State ranks 5th in the world in total number of citations in the area of global warming. Penn State also ranks 5th in the total number of citations per paper.

"If you look at the total number of times papers on global warming by scientists at Penn State have been cited, only one other university ranks higher, and that's Stanford," says Eric Post, associate professor of biology. "Moreover, the average impact of a paper on global warming by scientists at Penn State; that is, the average number of times other scientists cite these papers, also ranks 5th. Here again, the only other university that ranks higher than Penn State is Stanford. These figures illustrate Penn State's considerable influence on the field of research related to global warming."

According to Thomson Scientific's analysis of global warming research over the past decade, the scientist ranking at #9 is Dr. Eric Post, associate professor of biology, with a total of 417 citations. Dr. Post's record in Essential Science Indicators includes 20 papers cited a total of 1,049 times to date in the field of Environment and Ecology. Post also is a coauthor on the most highly ranked paper published in this field in the last 10 years, "Ecological Responses to Recent Climate Change," published in the scientific journal Nature on 28 March 2002.
