Weiss Appointed to Represent United States
to International Chemistry Organization

Paul Weiss, associate professor of chemistry at Penn State, has been selected to serve a two-year term as a member of the U.S. National Committee for the International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry.

The committee acts as the formal representative of the U.S. chemical community to the International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry, providing advice and input on behalf of U.S. scientists.  The committee arranges scientific meetings in the United States in accordance with the objectives of the union, encourages cooperative international studies and activities that promote the advancement of the chemical sciences, and involves U.S. researchers to address international issues.  Areas of emphasis for the union include: fostering research collaborations and communications, improving the public's understanding of science, promoting equitable access to research resources, and supporting opportunities for young scientists.

Through his research, Weiss has explored the properties of matter at the atomic scale.  His work includes studies of catalysis, molecular electronics, molecular motors, self-assembly, nanofabrication, and control of molecules on surfaces and in lipid bilayers.  With his group he has developed a number of techniques for measuring chemical, physical, and electronic properties at the atomic scale.

Weiss, a member of the Penn State faculty since 1989, has earned numerous awards.  He was elected a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science earlier this year.  He received a Guggenheim Fellowship from the John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation in 1997, the American Chemical Society Nobel Laureate Signature Award for Graduate Education in Chemistry in 1996, an Alfred P. Sloan Foundation Fellowship in 1995, and was named a Presidential Young Investigator by the National Science Foundation in 1991.
