16 April 2008—Applications now are being accepted from alumni who wish to help a freshman or sophomore student to experience a variety of science-oriented careers by serving as an on-the-job host for one or more days. The opportunity, which is part of the Science Externship Program, gives students the opportunity to shadow alumni or friends of the Eberly College of Science in their jobs. The goal of the program is to introduce students to the day-to-day realities of various careers so that they can make informed decisions related to their majors and courses. Piloted in 2007, the program includes discussion of different careers and the skills needed to succeed in them, a tour of the host's organization, and observation of the host's daily activities. "The best part of the program was the chance to learn about the careers that are available to me and to see what it's really like to work in those careers," said one student who participated in the program recently.
