Awards and Recognition

Eberly College of Science C. I. Noll Award for Excellence in Teaching

The C. I. Noll Award is presented annually to an outstanding faculty member within the Eberly College of Science. Nominations are accepted from alumni, faculty, and all students. Faculty may also nominate themselves or another faculty member.

The award is designed to recognize a faculty member who has taken a special interest in students, and who, through their interactions, has had a positive impact on them.

Wendy Hanna-Rose, assistant professor of biochemistry and molecular biology, and John Duff Hopkins, senior instructor of physics, are the 2007 recipients of the C. I. Noll Award for Excellence in Teaching.

Wendy Hanna-Rose

"She encourages students to critically think about the logic behind experimental designs and not to passively read the information."

"She is always ready to answer questions and further promote reasoning. Her approachability and passion for the material make her an excellent mentor and teacher." ."

John Duff Hopkins

"Given the nature of his audience, John has done a great job in engaging the students as evidenced by his student reviews." He has developed out-of-class activities where students perform their own experiments of physical principals using the normalness of everyday activities. Students have claimed 'he finds ways to entertain while teaching on what could be boring materials' to 'he cares about his student's growth and their ability to grasp the nature of scientific reasoning.'"
-- Dr. Richard Robinett, associate department head of physics
