The Alumni Fellow Award is the most prestigious award given by the Penn State Alumni Association. Since 1973, the Alumni Fellow Award has been given to select alumni who, as leaders in their professional fields, are nominated by an academic college and accept an invitation from the President of the University to return to campus to share their expertise with students, faculty, and administrators.
In 2007, the selection committee chose Gail Folena-Wasserman '79 M.S. Bioch, '82 Ph.D. Chem to receive the Alumni Fellow Award.

Gail Folena-Wasserman '79 M.S. Bioch, '82 Ph.D. Chem is senior vice president of development at MedImmune, the global biologics unit of AstraZeneca.

Folena-Wasserman joined MedImmune in 1991 to build the development organization, where she is responsible for analytical development and cell-culture, and purification and formulation process development for biological products. The company's core competencies are in the areas of pediatrics, respiratory infectious disease, monoclonal antibodies, and vaccines. Folena-Wasserman also overseas manufacturing and quality control for clinical products, technology transfer, and manufacturing support for commercial products. Prior to joining MedImmune, Folena-Wasserman spent nine years at SmithKline (currently Glaxo SmithKline) in small molecule drug discovery and biological product process development.
Folena-Wasserman has authored more than 25 publications, hold four patents, and has received several awards and honors, including the Scientific Achievement Award from SmithKline and French laboratories. She holds a bachelor's degree in biology and chemistry from Montclair University .
In 2003, she received the Eberly College of Science Outstanding Science Alumni Award.
