Penn State 's Eberly College of Science has created a new lecture series in the field of molecular medicine, thanks to a gift of $100,000 from a donor who wishes to remain anonymous. The Robert T. Simpson Lectureship in Molecular Medicine will support lectures by outstanding professionals in that field.
      
The first Simpson Lecture, featuring Gary Felsenfeld, chief of the Physical Chemistry section and the Laboratory of Molecular Biology at the National Institutes of Health, is scheduled for April 17, 2006.
      
The lecture memorializes Robert T. Simpson, an international leader in research on chromatin, a fundamental component of chromosomes, and its role in gene regulation, who passed away in 2004.  Simpson completed his M.D. in 1963 and received his Ph.D. in Biological Chemistry in 1969, both from Harvard University . He joined the Penn State faculty in 1995 as the Verne M. Willaman Professor of Molecular Biology, where he greatly enhanced the research and educational mission of the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology. Prior to his arrival at Penn State , he rose to the rank of lab chief at the Laboratory of Cell and Developmental Biology at the National Institutes of Health, where he was employed since 1969.
      
 "Bob was a tremendous asset to the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, " said Robert Schlegel, head of the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology. "Besides being a scientist of international renown who brought distinction to Penn State , he was a quiet leader in the department, an outstanding mentor to junior faculty, and a caring and thoughtful human being who is sorely missed."
