Thank you for your continued participation in the Science Co-op Program. We value your partnership in our efforts to prepare the next generation of scientists.

Science Co-op Program

Penn State's Eberly College of Science Co-op Program coordinates academic work placements for a few different populations of undergraduate and graduate students. Descriptions of each population are provided here; please contact us or consult the web sites provided if you would like more detailed information on specific programs.

Eberly College of Science Undergraduate Majors
Undergraduate co-op students are from all majors within the College, as well as science-related majors from other colleges, and they are required to complete multiple, alternating semesters of co-op assignments during the course of their undergraduate careers. Participation in the Co-op Program is optional for all majors, but once in the program, students need to commit to completing three assignments, which can be with different employers.

Master of Biotechnology
The Master of Biotechnology curriculum requires students to complete one year of courses, followed by an industrial internship and a research project completed during a summer/fall off-campus co-op experience. For more detailed information, you can visit the program web site at http://www.huck.psu.edu/ms/ms.html.

Master of Applied Statistics
The Master of Applied Statistics curriculum requires students to complete two years of courses. Students are encouraged to enhance their course work through completion of a summer or semester-length work assignment in industry. For more information on this degree program, visit the program web site at http://www.stat.psu.edu/grad/degrees/MAS/index.html. The students' availability will vary, since the curriculum is flexible.

Ph.D. Integrative Biosciences Students (IBIOS)
The IBIOS program includes a number of options, which you can view in more detail on the program web site at http://www.huck.psu.edu/GradEd/home.html. Students are encouraged to complete a summer internship to enhance their educational experiences at Penn State. Usually, they seek this internship the summer after their second year of courses, but there are exceptions to this standard, with some students completing assignments during an academic semester later in their degree programs.

To post positions and receive candidates' application packets, simply complete and return the appropriate (undergraduate or graduate) Employer Information Form to the Science Co-op Office along with your position descriptions.

Science Externship Program

Externships are designed to provide first-year and sophomore science students with observational experiences (1-4 days) with a professional at their place of work, experiencing a "day in the life" of the host's career. Through the Externship Program, unpaid student externs "shadow" individuals at work, take tours of the work place and job sites, and/or work on small projects for the organization. These experiences will assist students in gaining an understanding of the scope of daily responsibilities included in various careers in science and to learn the importance of gaining career-related experience. If you would like to host a science extern, please visit the Externship portion of our site for more information and to download a host registration form.
