Housing Information

For Students

The Student Handbook contains a section on housing suggestions. In addition, the following information may be helpful to you as you're looking for housing in State College or near your co-op assignment.

Residence Halls Contracts

You can cancel your residence hall contract for the semester you are on your co-op assignment. For example, if you are on co-op during the fall semester, your contract will be canceled during that time. However you are still bound to the contract for the spring semester. When you receive an email from the Housing Office asking about your semester plans related to co-op, study abroad, etc., please reply to the email with the relevant information. If you are unsure of your plans at the time you receive this message from Housing, then please delay in responding until your plans have been confirmed. It is your responsibility to inform the Housing Office of your plans and to ensure they are aware of any request to cancel your contract during a co-op semester.

Subletting Your Penn State Apartment

The Science Career and International Education Office has no authority in private apartment matters. Upon acceptance of a co-op position, it is your responsibility to decide if you want to sublet your apartment. Here are some suggestions for where to post your sublet for a State College apartment:

Housing Information for Your Co-op Assignment

Employer assistance varies widely. Some organizations may supply housing or provide housing stipends or partial financial assistance, but most often you will be responsible for finding and paying for your housing. Some employers may have housing information available for their local area, so be sure to ask for any information they may have on file.

Approach your housing search as a practice run for your future housing searches. The Science Career and International Education Office has information on housing in most areas and can put you in touch with other students who will be working in the area of your co-op. We can also provide you with the names and telephone numbers of other students who have lived and completed work assignments in the area. While the Science Career and International Education Office can help facilitate the process by providing information, we are not responsible for your housing arrangements or choice of roommates.
