Provost’s Distinguished Postdoctoral Scholar Program

THE PROGRAM:
The Provost’s Distinguished Postdoctoral Scholar Program has been established to encourage scientists to pursue an academic career in the Eberly College of Science at The Pennsylvania State University. The program supports postdoctoral appointments in the departments of Astronomy & Astrophysics, Biochemistry & Molecular Biology, Biology, Chemistry, Mathematics, Physics, and Statistics, for scholars who are committed to a university career in research, teaching and service. Scholars will work with one of the College’s outstanding faculty members and will be provided with mentoring and special opportunities to help them develop into exceptional tenure-track faculty candidates. Applicants must be citizens or permanent residents of the U.S. We particularly seek applicants who are African-American, Native American, Latino/Hispanic or McNair Scholars.

AWARDS AND APPOINTMENTS:
Up to three appointments will be awarded annually. Awards include
a highly competitive stipend and a supplement of $5,000 of discretionary money to support travel and research, in addition to the core research support from the advisor’s research grants and contracts. Appointments are renewable for a second year pending demonstration of satisfactory progress. Before conclusion of the second year, and pending demonstration of satisfactory progress during the first two years, the College will either offer a tenure-track faculty appointment, or extend the postdoctoral appointment for
a third year, during which time the individual will receive career counseling and academic job search assistance from the home department.
