| FISE House: A Diverse Living/Learning Experience | ||
| First
Year in Science and Engineering (FISE) House is a special living option
administered by the ColIeges of Earth and Mineral Science, Engineering,
the Eberly College of Science, and the Office of Residence Life. It was
developed to enhance the recruitment and retention of all students in technical
majors with a special focus on women and underrepresented groups. Now in
its eleventh year, FlSE House, which is located in Pennypacker Hall, provides
an opportunity for students of similar academic and career interests to
learn together and interact in a particularly supportive environment. FISE
House is also a unique diversity experience for students to appreciate and
respect cultural and ethnic differences of others. These technical colleges
are committed to improving the recruitment and retention of students through
graduation.
The goal of FISE House is to enhance the retention of first-year students in technical disciplines through out their freshman year. Academically focused programs such as collaborative workshops, team building activities, and group study are scheduled throughout the year to enhance the students’ learning experiences, provide incentive and motivation, and contribute to their personal growth and career development. One important aspect of the FISE House is the staff, especially the Program
Assistants (PAs), who are advanced standing undergraduate students in
technical disciplines and have demonstrated high levels of leadership
and schoIarIy attributes. The PAs, along with the Resident Assistants
(RAs), serve on a daily basis as mentors and role models, help organize
and lead activities, and provide a link between the Pennypacker Experience
Advisory Board and the residents. PAs are responsible for implementing
academic programs in the residence hall and serve as academic and social
mentors for the students. Because they reside in Pennypacker Hall with
the freshman, they also serve to facilitate the referral of students who
might benefit from internships, cooperative education, or employment opportunities. |
