Promoting a Supportive Lesbian, Gay,
Bisexual, Transgender, and Ally Environment

Educate Yourself

  1. Listen to an learn from lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) people
  2. Attend LGBT speakers, events, films, workshops, and cultural events
  3. Go through a whole day imagining yourself to be L, G, B, or T
  4. Model Non-Heteroxiest or Non-Homophobic Behavior and Attitudes
  5. Use inclusive language like partner or date rather than boyfrien/girlfriend or wife/husband
  6. Make friends with LGBT people
  7. Use the same standards for same-gender affection in public that you use for opposite-gender affection
  8. Create an Inclusive Culture and a Welcomign Environment
  9. Assume the people in your workplace or classroom are LGBT
  10. Say the words lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender out loud
  11. Post flyers announcing events of interest to LGBT individuals and groups
  12. Educate Ohters
  13. Have informal discussions at work or in the classroom
  14. Offer alternatives, accurate information, etc. when you hear homophobia steretypes of myths
  15. Sponsor an LGBT program
  16. Confront Overt Incident
  17. Interrupt heterosexist jokes, slurs, comments or assumptions
  18. Make clear to all who are involved both relevant policies and your own feelings
  19. Provide support to the victim/target of the attack
  20. Tak a Public Stand
  21. Promote LGBT non-discimination policies, hate-crime legislation, and domestic partner benefits.
  22. Write a letter
  23. Attend a rally or march supporting LGBT people
  24. Own Your Own Privilege
  25. Understand and educate yourself about oppression
  26. Learn to become an ally to others
  27. Attend education conferences and workshops around these topics
