DEPARTMENTAL STAFF MEMBERS
This should be your first stop! Your most important resource for finding your way through the maze of policies and procedures at an institution the size of Penn State is your team of departmental staff members. Each department has at least one experienced Administrative Assistant who is prepared to serve as a problem-solver -- if they don't have the answer right off, they'll know whom to call. All departments produce a directory that lists the names of all support staff members, many of them providing an indication of their functional areas of responsibility. It is a good idea to cultivate good working relationships with the support staff. They are out there with you on the front lines in fulfilling college missions. Your office
support team consists of knowledgeable and skilled people, proud
to be working at Penn State, and committed to doing the best job
they possibly can. |

DEAN'S OFFICE
Another important resource is the Eberly College of Science Dean's Office. Dean's Office staff members are here to support the entire college in pursuit of its missions. Keep in mind that if you're having difficulty with a procedure or policy, your departmental staff members may not have the authority to make the changes you would like to see. In these instances, please don't "kill the messenger" -- these things are as frustrating for them as they may be for you! -- but ask them to pursue the issue, or do so yourself, with someone in the Dean's Office. Policies and Procedures always exist for a reason, often having to do with legal issues. If something isn't working, however, we are committed to exploring the possiblity of a change, an exception, or a viable alternative. So ask! The Dean's
