X-ray image of the supernova remnant Cassiopeia A (Cas A) made with
the Advanced CCD Imaging Spectrometer (ACIS). NASA selected it as
the first image produced by the Chandra observatory to be released
to the public. The ACIS X-ray camera was conceived and developed for
NASA by Penn State and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology under
the leadership of Gordon Garmire, Evan Pugh Professor of Astronomy
and Astrophysics at Penn State. In recognition for his contributions
to the Chandra observatory, Garmire has been granted a block of guaranteed
observing time. Other astronomers worldwide submit competitive proposals
to NASA to obtain observing time on the ACIS X-ray camera. See stories
about discoveries made with Chandra's ACIS
X-ray camera. |
