Special Programs for Premedicine Majors

3 + 1 Program for Premedicine Majors - The 3 + 1 option within the Premedicine Major allows students to apply to medical or dental school one year early (after the sophomore year), and if accepted, to leave Penn State to start professional school after the junior year. Because of the competitive nature of medical school, it is  recommended that students have at least a 3.7 GPA to take advantage of this option. To satisfy the 3 + 1 option, students must complete 95 Penn State credits, including the courses designated below.

MATH 140, 141
BIOL 110, and 220, 230 or 240
CHEM
PHYS 211, 212, 213, 214
ENGL 15 or 30; and 202
SPCOM 100
GHA or ESACT (3 cr.)
Foreign Lang. (8 cr.)
Arts (6 cr), Humanities (6 cr.) and Social Sci (6 cr.)

Following the first year of medical or dental school, students in this option notify the Premed Office of their desire to obtain the Penn State B.S. degree. It is required that an official transcript from the professional school be forwarded to the Premed Office and that "intent to graduate" forms be completed by the student.

PSU/Jefferson Physician Shortage Area Program (PSAP) - The PSAP is a unique program whereby Penn State students who were raised in a rural area or small town and who intend to practice medicine in a non-metropolitan area (preferably in PA) are given preferential consideration to Jefferson Medical College. Those students who are from a rural area and have a strong interest to practice family medicine in a similar area should contact the Premedicine Office for more information regarding this program.

University Scholars Integrated Undergraduate-Graduate Program (IUG) with PSU's College of Medicine at Hershey - In this program, University Scholars of any major can apply to the College of Medicine after their 4th semester. At the time of application, the student should have at least a 3.5 and acceptable MCAT scores. Students accepted to this program will integrate their 3rd and 4th years between University Park and Hershey. Contact the Premedicine Office for more information regarding this program.

Accelerated, 6-Yr., Premed-Med Program in cooperation with Thomas Jefferson University College of Medicine - Outstanding students are accepted for this special program as high school seniors.  Minimal admission requirements include being in the top 10% of high schol class and having SAT scores of at least 1450.  Accepted students complete two years (including two summers) at Penn State and then four years at Jefferson, earning both the B.S. and M.D. degrees in six years.  For additional information, contact Dr. Markle at the Premedicine Office, 213 Whitmore, (814) 865-7620.
