University of Leeds, England, Fall 2006/Spring 2007
Biochemistry and Molecular Biology

Studying abroad had always been a dream of mine. For me it was a chance to really experience a different kind of life. It gave me an understanding of both the differences and similarities of the British education system. It also gave me a chance to meet wonderful people from all over the world and try new things that would not be possible in America.

I chose the University of Leeds for many reasons. I knew I wanted to study in Europe and had never excelled in languages so the United Kingdom seemed like the best choice. From that point on, I based my decision on the available classes. I sought a university that could offer the best variety of classes that coincided with my major. The University of Leeds is a very large university and it met those criteria. I also knew that I wanted to study for a full year and Leeds has a wonderful program for doing so.

The decision to study for a full year was made after careful consideration, but I feel that I made a great choice. I have received a better understanding of what it is to live in the UK than I would have if I had only chosen a semester. I can fully participate in clubs and teams and feel as though I am making more lasting connections. I am a member of the Leeds Celtics Cheerleading squad, the ballet society, the catholic society, and a committee member of the belly dance society. All these opportunities would not have been possible if I did not dedicate a full academic year in Leeds .

For anyone who is considering coming to Leeds I highly recommend it. It is a vibrant city, with a large university age population. It is a wonderful place to meet a variety of people and see the northern part of the UK . When most people think of England they think of London , but Leeds has a completely different feel. Overall I have found the people in Northern England to be extremely kind and helpful.

I am excited about completing the International Science Certificate. It will be a way to show graduate schools and future employers what I have learned from my experience abroad. The certificate is only for students studying for a full year abroad, which is another reason to spend a full academic year. It recognizes students who go abroad and focus on studying science. There is also required component where one can study the culture of the society and that has been a wonderful opportunity to learn more about the people and the country.
