
Peer Mentoring Program
What is the Premed/Science Peer Mentoring Program?
This program provides an opportunity for a select group of upperclass
students in the Eberly College of Science to serve as mentors for first
year students in the Premedicine and General Science Majors.
Purpose of the Program:

Help to make Penn State more individualized and personal by assigning an upperclass student
to work with and assist freshmen students.

Have upperclass students act as a mentors to first year students by serving
as positive role models.

Assist in the freshmen students' academic and personal adjustment to college life.

Enable peer mentors to act as resource people and make appropriate referrals.

Give peer mentors an opportunity to develop and improve leadership and communication skills.
Peer Mentor Qualifications:

Enrolled in the Eberly College of Science for at least two semesters.

Have 60 or more total credits completed.

Be able to serve as a peer mentor for an entire academic year.

Have a record of satisfactory academic performance.

Have a desire to work with and assist other students.

Possess personal characteristics such as effective interpersonal skills, sensitivity, maturity,
and self-discipline.
Peer Mentor Responsibilities:

Participate in two training programs.

Become familiar with University policies and rules, general education requirements,
requirements for majors, referral networks, etc.

Provide peer mentoring support for several freshmen in either the
Premed and/or General
Science Majors.

Contact assigned freshmen students at least three times a semester.

Maintain thorough records.

Assist in other activities related to Mentoring Program.
Supervision:
-
Peer mentors will work closely with and report to Amy Leddy, Premed
Advisor.
